Piers explores the relationship of rigid geometrical form with the fluid and ever changing Pacific. In this series, pilings and pier superstructure become the nexus between land and sea, between ground and distant horizon, and figuratively between the here and now and the space and time horizon. The more successful photos in this series present nearly abstract, geometric views of piers as the “connectors” of land with sea. Camera position, perspective, shutter speed, depth and width of field, contrast, and the photograph’s timing during the day or night are used to capture an image that the beachcomber might miss in his/her stroll under the pier.
