Circles and Crosses, 2015

Circles and Crosses was created in 2015 as a "3x3" of nine photographs and is based on shots taken in January 2014 at La Recoleta Cemetery where Evita Perón is interred (Buenos Aires, Argentina).

I was struck upon reviewing the photographs by the prevalent, symbolic use of both the circle and the cross. Some are depicted here -- three of the circles also encircle crosses.  While the Christian symbol of the cross is clear, what is symbolized by the circle? A simple architectural feature, or more? The cycle of life? The womb, and hence from circle to cross, birth to death? Or perhaps heaven -- the heavens seen from a flat plain or from the ocean are but a circle.
